Lumen’s new Computer Applications course will be delivered in Lumen One, a new platform that brings together the best of Lumen’s teaching & learning solutions including a full suite of professional development resources to support evidence-based teaching.

The Computer Applications course is a stepping stone to help students understand how to learn new technology tools more efficiently. Students will develop a working knowledge of basic computer literacy in order to build their confidence using technology in their future profession. Students will learn how to utilize a range of computer skills from the basics of using Windows to creating projects using Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. 

Students will engage with strategies to:

  • Reflect on computer application fundamentals and how to incorporate the ethical use of A.I. where applicable
  • Practice using internet research methods using different search engines
  • Follow step-by-step visual aids and videos instruction that scaffold the experience of completing common computer application projects
  • Create a capstone project with hands-on experience executing the learning outcomes 
  • Follow best practices for email etiquette, data security, and cloud computing

The course utilizes interactive content and practice with immediate feedback to maximize student understanding and retention. Every learning outcome includes practice questions that will help engage students to test their understanding. The instructor resources package is robust and includes easy-to-use, engaging slide decks, and in-class activity suggestions, with suggested modifications based on the modality of the course.

With support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Lumen One was developed to promote equitable outcomes in gateway courses.
